Wesley Letsholo
Ward 5 Candidate
My name is Wesley Letsholo. My wife Erin is originally from this area, and together we have called Lindsay home for 16 years. Erin is an ICU Nurse, and I am a small business owner. We love The City of Kawartha Lakes - from the breathtaking lakes, and beautiful trails; to the wonderful farms that feed us, and the historic downtown! We respect and appreciate the contribution of generations who have made the Kawartha Lakes a thriving community. I am committed to preserving what makes the Kawartha Lakes Attractive, Accessible and Welcoming to all!

Why am I running
We have just endured the most polarizing time in our recent history. I love my community! With mutual respect, we can engage in productive dialogue and grow despite conflict. Opposing ideas can be worked through as we strive to build a democratic, inclusive community for all.
Our Concern

Macroeconomic factors have destabilized and disrupted many of us, particularly those on fixed incomes. We have seen the cost of living (necessities such as food, housing, utilities, transportation, fuel) skyrocket, as viable employment opportunities have diminished. This has resulted in an increased demand on our social services that have finite resources. Our community deserves to see a viable economic plan that will attract industry back to the City of Kawartha Lakes ultimately providing beneficial employment for our constituents. Our local small business owners deserve support to grow their businesses as well. Â
We have seen an increase of inadequately housed members of our community. Some of the factors contributing to this situation include: lack of affordable housing, loss of reliable employment, decline in mental health, and substance abuse. Because of these factors we have seen an elevation of petty crime in our area. Sadly, it has often been found that multiple arrests can be linked to the same individuals. Of course, our community members negatively affected by crime are often left feeling vulnerable.
My goal is to disrupt this cycle by improving our community program partnerships with law enforcement. Many of the organizations in our area are doing wonderful work but have individual limits that could be improved by better community partnerships. We need to adopt a Community-Based approach and address the root causes of our local ailments.
Key issues affecting our community presently.
1.           The increased cost of living
2.           Housing availability and cost
3.           The increase in petty crime.
My Focus

Community Mental Health & Wellness
As a Board member of Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative for the past two years, I am aware of the challenges our residents face when looking for a Family Doctor. Currently over 3500 adults and 800 children are without a doctor. The situation will intensify as our population grows. This is a critical issue for our community! As a Board we are working diligently to recruit and retain Family Doctors to serve our region.
As a Board member of City of Kawartha Lakes Community Care Foundation for the past two years I have seen and supported the impactful programs they provide including:
· Healing After Suicide
· Healing After Overdose
· Stars Program
· Soldiers of Change
Our community has been through a difficult time! A healthy community is a safe community. If elected, I will introduce the first ever CKL Community Health and Wellness App that will encourage our families, neighbours, and friends to get active as they enjoy the beauty of Kawartha Lakes.
Environmentally Sound Infrastructure Development
As our community grows, it is my goal to ensure that no one is left behind or excluded. Growth and expansion are necessary, as is protecting our Environment. Sustainable growth can only be achieved by working together.

Partnership between Law Enforcement and Community Programs
Our law enforcement needs our support as they keep us safe. As our population increases and our community embraces diversity it is critical to promote unified, healthy relationships.

My Impact
As a small business owner, I appreciate the challenges that come with running a business, especially in a precarious economic environment. Fiscal prudence, well researched ideas, partnerships, and customer service are the foundation of my business. These are qualities I can contribute to the CKL Council. I will bring enthusiasm and prioritize the common good if elected to council. I will promote and facilitate key partnerships to address the issues that face our community. My disciplined purpose will be to serve my community!
